Why Do We Need A Soundtrack for Refusal?
On the MUSIC front, this is a collection of great artists from both the underground and mainstream music world putting some serious energy towards a just and peaceful foreign policy. We talked to artists who have supported our work and the work of anti-war veterans and service-members in the past, and reached out to artists we knew would support the project. All artists donated their songs to support our work, and to support the men and women of the U.S. military as they deal with hard choices and even harder situations.
On the CULTURAL front, this is building an open-dialogue between the music world and members of the military. Throughout history, governments have poured huge amounts of money into controlling the culture of the military, loading their soldiers' minds with songs, images, slogans, and mythology, and more recently, with movies and video games. This CD is part of a long history of civilians and veterans reaching out to the military community with a different culture, using thoughtful and sincere music to bring up what are often hard subjects to discuss.
On the ORGANIZING front, this serves as a tool for you and whoever you share it with to use to educate and inspire folks to work towards a peaceful future and join forces with veterans and service-members who need your support. For all you veterans and service-members who get ahold of this, it will introduce you to the GI movement, so you can join or support those within the ranks as they stand up to the generals and political leaders who have thrown members of our military out to fight and die in these profitable and disastrous wars. And it will point to other organizations doing similar work, like Iraq Veterans Against the War and Courage to Resist.
On the SUPPORT front, this benefits the Civilian-Soldier Alliance as we continue the hard work of supporting veterans and active-duty service-members who find the courage and strength to speak out and organize against war, for alternative international policies that support, rather than destroy, human life. The money we make from this will fund our organizer-training programs and the printing of materials we use for outreach, as well as making stipends available for our team of organizers to do the work they need to do to build an anti-war movement alongside members and veterans of the U.S. military.
